How Stress Affects Children in Unsafe Environments

Stress is a natural reaction in the body, but when children are exposed to long-term stress in unsafe environments, it can have profound effects on their development. Unfortunately, many children live in conditions marked by violence, conflict, neglect, or fear. Research shows that these experiences impact brain function and the child’s future well-being.

What happens in the body when a child is stressed?

During chronic stress, the body releases the hormone cortisol over an extended period. This affects the brain’s structure and function, particularly:

  • Hippocampus – important for memory and learning
  • Amygdala – regulates fear, anxiety, and threat responses
  • Prefrontal cortex – responsible for impulse control and decision-making

If the stress is not interrupted, the child may struggle with concentration, memory, and interpreting others’ emotions.

What do stressed children need?

Children need safe adults, stable routines, empathy, and the feeling of being seen and heard. Early identification of stress and supportive interventions — at school, preschool, and home — can change lives.

A secure child is a child who can learn, play, and thrive.
